Automatic temporary protection of Ukrainians in Bulgaria canceled
Temporary protection in Bulgaria: new conditions and rules
As of January 25, 2024, new rules for obtaining temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine have been introduced in Bulgaria. According to the Decision of the Ministerial Council (MC) No. 54, the validity of temporary protection has been extended until March 4, 2025. However, the extension of the status now requires a personal statement from the refugee.
What's changed?
- Extension of temporary protection:
- Temporary protection status has been automatically extended in previous years, but now you must personally confirm your desire to extend the status.
- Refugee will:
- New applicants must apply in person to the appropriate authorities and submit a statement of intent to obtain protection.
How should refugees proceed?
- For those who have already received temporary protection:
- You have until March 4, 2025 to apply to the Bulgarian Migration Services and submit an application for extension of status.
- The right to seek other grounds for residence is open, e.g., to formalize the EU Blue Card.
- For new applicants for temporary protection:
- Submit an application to the local authorities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Refugee Agency or Migration Service).
Opportunities and alternatives
Refugees who do not wish to extend their temporary protection status may consider the following options:
- Obtaining a student visa.
- Issuance of the EU Blue Card (for highly qualified specialists).
- Participation in programs to obtain a permanent residence permit.
Conclusion
The new rules bring more autonomy and responsibility to the procedure for extending or applying for temporary refugee protection.
