Temporary protection in Bulgaria: new conditions and rules
As of January 25, 2024, new rules for obtaining temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine have been introduced in Bulgaria. According to the Decision of the Ministerial Council (MC) No. 54, the validity of temporary protection has been extended until March 4, 2025. However, the extension of the status now requires a personal statement from the refugee.

- Temporary protection status has been automatically extended in previous years, but now you must personally confirm your desire to extend the status.
- Refugee will:
- New applicants must apply in person to the appropriate authorities and submit a statement of intent to obtain protection.

- You have until March 4, 2025 to apply to the Bulgarian Migration Services and submit an application for extension of status.
- The right to seek other grounds for residence is open, e.g., to formalize the EU Blue Card.
- For new applicants for temporary protection:
- Submit an application to the local authorities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Refugee Agency or Migration Service).
